Video Submission Guidelines

Railway Herald now regularly includes video footage within the pages of the magazine and on our website and we welcome video submissions from readers.

Filming Standards

While we welcome contributions, there are a small number of minimum standards that any submitted footage must adhere to. It should be filmed using a tripod, and if any zooming or panning is involved, it should be smooth and preferably in one smooth motion. Additionally the sound quality should be reasonable to good. Footage with people shouting in the background for example, would not be used by Railway Herald. If in doubt, please contact the Editorial Office for advice.

How to submit video footage

As with the majority of news content reported by Railway Herald in the pages of the magazine or the website, time is critical. While video footage can be accepted on DVD disc (either in Data or Video formats) or on MiniDV tape, we prefer online submissions of the original files (or capture files) direct from the camera. Railway Herald provides a "Large File Upload System" please contact us for access.

Video Formats

Railway Herald can accept most video formats produced by today's digital video camera's, including Windows Media (WMV), Microsoft Video (AVI), M-PEG2 (MP2), Quicktime (MOV), AVCHD (MTS, MT2S). If you have other formats, please check with us first.

High Definition

We accept both Standard Definition (both 4:3 and 16:9) and High Definition files, although HD files are preferred where possible.

Submitting Footage Details

While large files can be submitted using our online systems, please email the Editor including details of the locations, dates and workings featured. These details should be provided in the same order as they appear on the footage, if the footage includes more than one shot.

It is entirely up to the contributor when submitting multiple shots if they should be submitted as one file or multiple files. From our point of view, editing files that only contain one shot is preferable.
