The Railway Touring Company operates a number of charters from various centres which are routed via Crewe to exchange traction for a steam locomotive to continue north to Carlisle via the WCML and returning via the S&C. On June 25 2011 it was Royal Scot 4-6-0 No. 46115 Scots Guardsman which had taken over the Leicester tour at Preston (instead of Crewe) and powered its 12-coach load over the summit at Ais Gill on its return journey to Preston.
