Services on the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway have to be 'top and tailed' as there are no run-round facilities at the extemities of the line situated high up in a bleak and desolate landscape on what was the south Wales coalfield. The centre of operations is at Furnace Sidings, near Blaenavon, a site that has been developed much in recent years, and it is this station that is featured in this image taken on 21st July 2012. Ex-War Department Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 71515 is seen entering the station while working the 16:08 from Big Pit. From here it will reverse direction to visit Blaenavon (High Level) hauled by Class 37 No. 37219, which may be seen at the rear of this train.
