On the 3rd March 2013 the Frankfurt Historical Railway Society (Historische Eisenbahn Frankfurt)ran a special as the last steam through the soon to be closed Eppsteiner Tunnel. The train was pulled by DRG Class 52 No. 52 4867. The old tunnel was built from 1875 to 1877 for the Hessian Ludwigsbahn and was originally single track, the 2nd. track being added in 1914. The entrance to the building site for the new tunnel can be seen to the left of the engine. The old tunnel will be filled in once the new tunnel is operational which should be by the end of March.
