Between March 1990 and September 1991 due to the worsening political situation and associated violence in South Africa the nameplates of preserved A4 No. 60009 were temporarily removed. In their place she carried the name 'Osprey' which the LNER had originally allocated to the locomotive in 1937 while it was under construction at Doncaster Works. This image taken on Saturday 20th April 1991 shows No. 60009 'Osprey' leaving Crewe with a 'Ynys Mon Express' for Holyhead. Of note, other than the unusual name, are the miniature national flags of Scotland and Wales attached to the oil lamps above the buffers. I wonder if they survived the trip to Holyhead and back?
