NER No. 1, later BR 26500, Bo-Bo electric loco with both 3rd rail and overhead pick-up, built by Brush in 1902 and withdrawn in 1965. It and its classmate NER No. 2 were built specifically for the steep gradients through tunnels between Newcastle Manors and the Quayside where steam locos were causing fire problems. The OHL was used for safety purposes in the yards and 3rd rail in the tunnels and when running on Tyneside Electric lines.
