North Eastern Railway 0-6-0 steam locomotive No. 1275 is the only surviving British long boiler main line tender engine. The long boiler was patented by Robert Stephenson & Company in 1833 to promote the maximum transfer of heat from the hot gases during their passage through the boiler tubes from the firebox. No. 1275 was a late example, built by DBs & Company in Glasgow, and delivered to the North Eastern Railway in 1874 to work on the Stockton and Darlington line. It remained in service until 1923. The engine was restored at Darlington Works in 1925 for the Stockton and Darlington centenary celebrations, and is now displayed at the National Railway Museum in York, seen here on 11th June 2018.
