On 14th September 2019, due to engineering works at Calton Tunnel at the east end of Edinburgh Waverley Station, ECML Services had to be diverted via Carstairs, Carlisle and the Tyne Valley. Here, LNER Class 43/2 HST No. 43238 'National Railway Museum 40 Years 1975 - 2015' passes sedately through Hexham Station (which opened in 1835 and is one of the oldest railway stations in the world, built to link the lead mines of the North Pennines to the Tyne Docks at Blaydon), heading the 08:42 Edinburgh to London King's Cross service on 14th September 2019. Its Classmate No. 43277 was on the rear of the train.
