GB Railfreight has confirmed that it has acquired 16 Class 56 locomotives from UK Rail Leasing to provide additional heavy freight haulage.

The deal includes a mixture of stored, serviceable and non-running donor locomotives that will provide the company with flexibility over a return to service, and potential re-engineering options. Initially, some of these vehicles are to be moved from Leicester for secure storage pending decisions on the future requirements, while others are to be returned to service.

The company would not comment on the potential for re-engineering options.

Full details are available in the forthcoming Railway Herald, Issue 600.
