The introduction of ETH to passenger stock led to a gradual displacement of steam-heated stock and by 1979 few services were steam-heated. One survivor was the Crewe - Cardiff services for which steam-heat Class 25 traction became the normal motive power and on 8th May 1979 it was Class 25/2 No. 25222 which entered Church Stretton with a Crewe - Cardiff service. Of interest is the Crewe test train in the loop with Class 47/7 No. 47704 Holyrood undergoing a test run after its conversion.
