The proposed HS2 design from Talgo Talgo

Talgo has submitted the latest generation of its 'Very High Speed' rolling stock platform as the basis for its HS2 bid.

The AVRIL platform represents the latest evolution of Talgo's high-speed train design, which is now being used in Spain, Saudi Arabia and Central Asia. The design has recently been selected by Spanish operator Renfe, to form the core of its vanguard very high-speed fleet, with 30 trains under construction.

Meanwhile, CAF became the last of the five shortlisted contenders to confirm its bid to supply rolling stock for HS2, which is to be based around its high-speed Oaris platform.

CAF UK Director, Richard Garner, said: “The Oaris platform uses the latest technology to offer high-speed travel and has demonstrated its capacity to operate at speeds over 360 km/h - combined with the advantages of proven reliability, comfort and safety.” The company opened its manufacturing plant at Newport last year, but media access to the site has so far been heavily restricted.
