On 24th April 1981 the Yorkshire Dales and much of the country were hit by a heavy snowstorm which closed the Settle-Carlisle later in the day. I spent a very memorable day in the signal box with the wonderfully welcoming and entertaining signalman, George Horner, witnessing how the railway battled to cope with the severe weather.
