In 1988 BR had announced their intention to close the S&C and that generated a huge surge in passengers wanting to travel over what was envisaged as a doomed line, so much so that the passenger services were replaced by substantial Loco hauled trains. A strengthened 10:45 Leeds-Carlisle hauled by Class 47 No. 47595 passes the picturesque Eden Valley at Baron Wood on 25th June 1988.
