Preserved Class 52 No. D1041 'Western Prince' is on display at the Crewe Basford Hall Yard Open Day on 27th August 1995. Built locally by BR at Crewe Works No. D1041 entered service with BR's Western Region during October 1962 based at Old Oak Common MPD, London. No. D1041, by then allocated to Plymouth Laira MPD and having covered over 1.3 million miles, was withdrawn with a burnt-out dynastarter less than 15 years later on 22nd February 1977, the remaining 4 Westerns surviving just 4 more days until all were withdrawn on 26th February 1977. Purchased for preservation in May 1977 No. D1041 has been based on the East Lancashire Railway for nearly 37 years.
