Western demise (1) - the start opresaged the end of the non-standard diesel-hydraulic Westerns on British Railways, with enthusiast groups running a number of special trains to mark their passing. on 29th January 1977 the Western Memorial started from Paddington and visited both Swindon and Crewe - both locations responsible for the original manufacture of the D1000 fleet. No. 1023 'Western Fusilier' is seen near Ruscombe on the down main line to Reading on a cold frosty morning.
